Sterling views for miles along Alabama’s pristine beaches
Sea Breeze

In the middle of Sterling Resorts’ 300 miles of coastal choices is Gulf Shores. Commanding a scenic spot on Alabama’s coastal tip, this town is bordered on all sides by choices of waterfront: the brightly-colored waters of the Gulf of Mexico, quiet bays, historic bayous, lakes and canals.

This popular island destination is home to a memorable mix of casual and fine dining, coastal shopping and entertainment. At the northern edge of Gulf Shores, the Intracoastal Canal is home to a renaissance of night life and family attractions.

Annual traditions draw guests back year after year with the same power that the moon draws the tide at Gulf Shores. Two of our favorites are Mardi Gras and the National Shrimp Festival.

Each winter, Mardi Gras transforms the beachfront routes into a South American Carnivale scene with mythical creatures, gods and goddesses, crowds cheering and paraders throwing beads, doubloons and moon pies. The National Shrimp Festival in October Is a more laid-back event, but hardly shrimpy in scale.

No matter what time of year you visit, try popular attractions like these:

  • Waterville, USA—this aquatic-themed park has kept itself new year after year with rides like the FlowRider and 60-foot-drop Screamin’ Demon.
  • Sweet Home Farms—Amid the fast pace of most attractions, a tour of this artisanal dairy farm is luxuriously slow—and delicious. Traditional cheese makers offer a tour and sampling.
  • Putt-putt—Adventure Island, Pirate Island and Zooland Mini Golf all vie for vacation time.

  • Visit during Shrimp Festival and try shrimp on a stick. Visit any other time of the year and find Gulf Shores’ favorite crustacean showing up in gumbo, on pizza, boiled, fried or sauced into a cocktail. Alabama is known for its home cooking, and this vibrant beach community puts that home-front cuisine on the waterfront.
  • LuLu’s at Homeport Marina draws a crowd with gulf coast cook Lucy Buffett’s fresh seafood, deep drinks and lively music. 200 East Avenue, Gulf Shores. (251) 967. LULU
  • Cosmo’s Restaurant and Bar has become well-known for its fusion of sushi and southern standards. Favorites include the whistlestop-meets-wasabi Fried Green Tomato BLT roll. 25753 Canal Road, Orange Beach. (251) 948.9663
  • The Restaurant at The Beach Club provides a perfect vantage point for coastal views and cuisine with Sterling-standard service. At The Beach Club (251) 224.3600

  • Crab Races at Calypso’s
  • Tours of historic Fort Morgan
  • Sunsets
  • Scuba diving/snorkeling
  • Dolphin cruises
  • The Ferris Wheel at The Wharf
  • Walking the beach
  • Blue Angels air shows
  • Beachfront grilling and barbecues
  • Gulf Shores Zoo
